The Urban Carpet
The Urban Carpet
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
The unique Urban Carpet is a prominent, 45,208 square foot landmark that pays homage to weaving, which is one of the most widespread and traditional crafts in the world that has been practiced throughout the history of time. In particular, the Urban Carpet Landmark personifies the practice on an architectural scale by weaving spaces with a looping structural system. Specifically, the Urban Carpet Landmark combines infrastructure and architecture for a speculative redevelopment of the bespoke landmark at the center of the Dubai Creek Harbour. The project explores ways of producing architectural interventions based on an understanding of the city as a field of dynamics. The Urban Carpet Landmark is thought to be a transient space. Melike Altinisik Architects’ original design was a finalist at the design competition hosted by the United Arab Emirates authority.
